Amgen Tour, Levi Just Misses TT, Horner Keeps Lead

The winner of the last 3 Tours of California, Team RadioShack?s Levi Leipheimer, who is also the winner of its last 3 time trials in the city of Solvang, just missed his fourth victory in this year?s TT to Garmin-Cervélo?s David Zabriskie by 13 seconds. Levi looked very strong on the first parts of the [...]

Amgen Tour, Stage 4, Chris Horner?s Climbing Clinic

Team RadioShack?s Chris Horner schooled the peloton at the Tour of California on how to power up the summit on Sierra Road at the end of the 82-mile (132-kilometer) stage from Livermore to San Jose, with a burst of power that must have left heads shaking in disbelief. While everyone was convinced that Levi Leipheimer?s [...]

An Autumn Escape to Big Bend Country

Big Bend Loop, October 2012

Two of Adventure Cycling's final tours for 2012, the inaugural trips for the Big Bend Loop van-supported tour, just wrapped up. For the first trip, I was lucky enough to fill the shoes as co-leader alongside veteran Southern Tier leader, Dave Points.

The 9-day tour in far west Texas consisted of top-notch road riding on quiet, lightly trafficked roads, excellent camping (and two nights spent indoors), and some truly world-class scenery, both in and outside of the national park.

Big Bend Loop, October 2012

Dave and I met a few members of the group in El Paso on the morning of day one, and we left the bustling city for the three and a half hour drive to Fort Davis, our trailhead for the tour. After arriving at Stone Village Tourist Camp in Fort Davis, we met the rest of our group, who had elected to drive their own vehicles. We held an introductory meeting, went over the route for the following day and then walked down the street for a buffet dinner at a local Tex-Mex eatery. On Sunday morning, the group departed Fort Davis, riding on a beautiful stretch of the Southern Tier Bicycle Route to Marathon, our oasis for the night. Several riders made a mid-day stop in Alpine for a tasty treat at Bread & Breakfast, the local bakery and cinnamon roll haven.

Big Bend Loop, October 2012

The following week of cycling took us through the grandiose Big Bend National Park, the lively, still-inhabited ghost town of Terlingua, along the scenic River Road through Big Bend Ranch State Park to the border town of Presidio, and on to the groovy town of Marfa, our last night?s camping location. We had some extraordinary camping on the trip, including one campsite right near the banks of the Rio Grande and another in Chisos Basin -- where a hike to see The Window is not to be missed!

If you?re looking for a spring or late fall cycling adventure and some serious scenery, then look no further. We are offering the Big Bend Loop tour three times in 2013:

Top 10 Posts of October: What do you want more of?

In the new year, we will be reorganizing the Adventure Cycling blog, offering new content and more of the most popular content: touring gear and tips, photos, videos, online extras from Adventure Cyclist magazine, and more.

When thinking about what to change or improve, we have gleaned a lot from our web stats, but we would really love direct input as well! Please tell us what you want to read or see more of on the blog by leaving a comment on this post or on Facebook, or by sending a message on Twitter.

As food for thought, check out our top 10 posts from October!

#10. U.S. Bicycle Route System 101 - This post gives a quick introduction to the U.S. Bicycle Route System. While #10 in October, it is actually our #1 blog post of all time!

#9. Why Rhine Rhymes with USBRS - The success of EuroVelo (Europe's official cycling route network) has many lessons for us as we work to build an official U.S. Bicycle Route System.

#8 Riding the Rhine River Bicycle Route - First-hand account of a four-day trip on the Rhine River Bicycle Route.

#7. I Like Your Bike. - Whimsical post about showing your fellow cyclists some love with "I Like Your Bike." flyers. A quick and fun way to make a cyclist's day!

#6. What Makes a Good Bicycle Travel Video? Show us! - We recently kicked off our first bike-travel video contest with a fabulous guest post from Blanche van der Meer featuring tips on creating your bike-touring masterpiece.

#5. Product Spotlight: Chico Bag - Handy, light, reusable. What's not to love? Product reviews are a yes, no?

#4. Passport to Pain - Each year, this creative fundraising ride on Vashon Island takes in all of the island's hills for 10,000 vertical feet of climbing in one day. Now who doesn't want to do (or read about) that?

#3. Reader Giveaway: Bike shipping box from BikeFlights.com - This giveaway is over. But since it's #3 for the month and captured more than 68 comments, we think it's pretty obvious that giveaways are popular!

#2. 50 Places to Bike Before You Die - Routes and destinations. No surprise that this is #2.

#1. Tour prepping a recumbent - October's #1 post is a very nice contribution from Bryan J. Ball, editor of BentRider Online. We've heard a lot from recumbent riders about wanting more content specifically for their rides. This June, Adventure Cyclist dedicated an entire issue to alternative rides (check out a few of the features), and we plan on bringing Bryan back to the blog for several more posts this year!

Now, we'd really value your input! What do you want to see more of?

Gettin' Fancy.

At Adventure Cycling headquarters, our work environment is the epitome of casual, so our high heels, bow ties, lacy dresses, suits, and whatnot, collect dust in wait for a semi-formal wedding or party invite.

Until, that is, we instated "Fancy Friday." We pulled our fanciest outfits from the back of the stacks to spruce up our workday.

Just another reason it's so great to work at Adventure Cycling.

A proper memorial for your revered bicycle

Wondering about a proper resting place for your two-wheeled riding partner? Consider mounting its handlebars on your wall.

There’s a rusting Fuji Dynamic 10 bicycle in my garage that is no longer road worthy and has been  replaced — several times. But I just can’t bear to part with it; we’ve been through so much …

Levi Leipheimer Maintains 2nd in Catalunya 2011

Today?s 5th stage of Spain?s venerated Volta a Catalunya was about as mountainous as a route can be and still not be officially classified a full on ?mountain stage.? Starting in El Vendrell and finishing some 206 kilometers (128 miles) later in Tarragona, the route profile of this year?s longest stage had the look of [...]
