Safe passing bill hearing in Olympia today supports bicycling

Thanks to all those bicyclists who are heading to Olympia today for Transportation Advocacy Day.

One bicycle-friendly Senate bill that’s on tap for a hearing Tuesday would make it legal for motorists to cross over a double-yellow line to give safe passage to bicyclists or pedestrians. The bill defines safe passage as a 3-foot gap.

Guideline Cabo Sunglasses

It's Fat Bike February, and with the future of fat bikes so bright, you had best be wearing some shades.

When talking about fat bike apparel, there is often a lot of focus on warm layers, and waterproof clothing, however, sunglasses are a pivotal piece of equipment. Whether you're riding through the snow or along a beach, chances are you're going to have a lot of surface area around you reflecting the sunlight back up into your face, intensifying it the sun's effect. This can impair your vision, and believe it or not, squinting does soak up a good amount of energy over the long run, which you would much rather put into pedaling.

As far as eyewear is concerned, there are an overwhelming amount of active sunglasses manufacturers out there. Perhaps a sleeper company moving into the bicycle scene is Guideline Eyewear. They have a strong background in producing sunglasses for water sports, which is perfect as long as we're talking about reflective services.

For much of this winter, I've been riding in their Cabo glasses, with dark polarized lenses. First impression is that these things are crazy light compared to other active glasses I've worn in the past. Couple that up with their semi-rimless frames, before I'm even warmed up, I've forgotten that I have them on. I have also had no problems with them fogging up, which can be a common issue with fat biking, since it is often done at slower speeds with lots of huffing and puffing... at least I hope that's not just me.

One very cool features of these shades, and the company as a whole, is that walk the walk on the eco-friendly front. The Cabo sunglasses frame incorporates bio based materials (castor bean oil), and they strive to cut down on the emissions during production. Even the packaging they use for their sunglasses is made from 100% recycled materials.

At $49.95, these are a steal, and unlike many performance sunglasses, they look good off the bike as well.

How to Deal with Dog Encounters

If you ask a traveling cyclist about their scariest moment on a bike, many of them will respond with a tale about an encounter with a loose dog.

This is a situation which cyclists can encounter on roads across the U.S. and around the world. Though we haven't formally tracked the number of reports we've received from each U.S. state, anecdotally it seems like Kentucky holds the lead in cyclist vs. dog encounters in the U.S.

When I recently spoke with Troy Hearn, Kentucky Bicycle Pedestrian Program Coordinator, about the issue he didn't shy away. Troy, a long-time cyclist, knows firsthand there are trade offs to riding the great, low-traffic roads of rural Kentucky on routes like our TransAmerica Trail. "Truth is," he said, "dogs roam free on our country roads."

Going on numbers alone, Kentucky hosts the second-highest number of miles on the TransAm, so it's possible the reports are slightly skewed by vastness of Kentucky's roads and not just the nature of the communities that rest along them. While we have talked about the possibility of a reroute in Kentucky, it doesn't look promising. In order to retain the rural aspect of the route it isn't likely we'd find another set of roads that would be dramatically different in this respect.

All that being said, what should you do when you see Rover on the road ahead of you? There are many tactics you might employ, each with it's own positives and negatives, several of which are described in these articles recommended by Troy as resources: Dealing with Dogs and Cycling with Aggressive Dogs Around.

If you have a particularly scary encounter with a dog on one of our routes, please report it to us with as much information as you can about the location on a map correction card or to @acaroutes on Twitter with the route-specific hashtag. If we can pinpoint problem areas, we can alert future cyclists about these stretches via our online addenda system.

Limited Edition

It's a true story that I'm a huge sucker for limited-edition runs of products.  Recently, I caved and snagged a pair of Bont Thor Hushovd signature-edition cycling shoes, and I'm brainstorming another tour for this summer so I can swing by the Adventure Cycling office to snag another Bikelingual bandana, available only to touring cyclists who visit our headquarters.

Fortunately for me, and unfortunately for my bank account, you can find limited-edition runs of cycling products just about anywhere.  It's a great way for companies to test out new designs, while getting a boost in advertising while their at it.  For consumers, it's a fun way to get a hold of a product you've been eyeing, but with a little more flair.  Here are some limited-edition items I've been checking out lately:

Ortlieb 30 Year Anniversary Panniers

Do I currently have a set of Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic panniers?  Yes, but it's always good to have a backup, right?  For Ortlieb's 30th anniversary, they have released a special-edition series of their popular Back Roller Classic panniers.  Available as a single pannier only, they come in an assortment of colors, featuring various countries and continents.  The Belgian pannier looks pretty tempting to me.

Brooks Limited Edition Saddles

Brooks England is most certainly a company that embraces the limited run. You'll find saddles that Brooks has resurrected from the past, commemorative saddles, and saddles made in collaboration with other organizations or companies, such as the Vans shoes company.  It's hard not to be a fan of the B17 Select World Traveler 2012 saddle.  Only 2,012 saddles available!

Giro First Friday 50

Absolutely love what Giro is doing right now.  On the first Friday of every month, they will release a new product in a limited run of 50 pieces that is available only to their Facebook fans.  Just "like" them on Facebook, and keep a sharp eye out for their next product announcement.  They were quick to sell out of the cycling caps they had for their January offer, so if you're going to act in February, act fast!

Just remember, if you're not into buying limited-edition runs of product, just hang onto what you have now.  Given enough time, almost everything becomes limited at some point.
