2013 Bicycle Travel Video Contest

I've been corresponding with Blanche van der Meer for the past 6 months on launching an online video contest to celebrate the booming trend in bike touring and travel documentaries. Blanche moderates the very successful WorldCycle Videos group on Vimeo, which has attracted more than 1,500 submissions! She has seen first-hand the growing enthusiasm for bicycle-travel videos.

In collaboration with WorldCycle Videos, Adventure Cycling's first Bicycle Travel Video Contest will begin accepting submissions on January 2, 2013. Now is the time to check out the submission categories and begin production, whether you plan an autumn bike overnight video shoot, tackle your footage from a past adventure, or set up an interview with a bicycle traveler who inspires you to document their passion and story in a portrait piece.

From January 2 through February 28, 2013, video submissions will be accepted in the following categories:

  • Best Long Distance Tour Video: Submit your best narrative or experimental video about a long-distance bike tour. Submissions must not exceed 7 minutes in length.
  • Best Bike Overnight Video: Submit your best narrative or experimental video about a 1-2 night bike tour. Submissions must capture the experience of a 1-2 night tour, not 1-2 nights of a longer tour, and must not exceed 3 minutes in length.
  • Best Portrait of a Traveling Cyclist: Submit your best narrative or experimental video portrait of a touring cyclist. Self-portraits are acceptable. Submissions must not exceed 5 minutes.
All videos will be considered for the Bike Travel Spirit Award, which will be awarded by the judges to the video that best captures the spirit of bike travel and touring.

All videos will also be eligible for the People's Choice Award, which will be awarded to the video with the most "likes" on Vimeo.

Over the next few months, we will share guest posts from our star-studded line up of judges with tips on telling bike-touring tales through video, along with some of their favorite pieces. These volunteer judges are all avid cycle-tourists and/or videographers and look forward to your submissions, they include:

We can't wait to see the amazing places, experiences, and people that you've captured by video!

Tour de France, Stage 2- How Do They Do That?

55,645 Kilometers Per Hour! That?s 34.6 miles an hour. That?s the AVERAGE speed of Garmin-Cervélo in the short 23-kilometer (14.3 mile) Team Time Trial contested on the streets of Les Essarts, France on Sunday. Team RadioShack, just 10 seconds back, were close to that speed as well. Given the perfect convergence of a bunch of [...]

Choosing a bike saddle for comfort

By: Zoey Lancaster
Choosing a bike saddle for comfort is fun and can be used for stress relief. The last thing a cyclist needs is an uncomfortable saddle, as this will make riding an unbearable experience. Some people think that saddle discomfort has to be tolerated, but a proper bike seat is all you need to enjoy the freedom, convenience and pleasures of bike riding. The shape of a saddle is important in accommodating your anatomy. Women?s bicycle saddles are wider than men?s due to their wider sit bones. For a saddle that fits you perfectly, you need to consider your build, age, gender, weight, type of biking and riding time. A good bicycle saddle should be able to support your body weight while you pedal, balance and steer. When you hit a bump or cycle over uneven surfaces, the saddle must absorb the shock without transferring it to you. This way, you will not feel any impact.

Oregon boasts nine official Scenic Bikeways that allow bicycle tourists to easily experience some picturesque landscapes on low-traffic roads. Now Travel Oregon is promoting them on video. Their first film, a larger version can be seen on the jump, shows some highlights from the Old West Scenic Bikeway in eastern Oregon. The 174-mile bike loop starts in John Day and is designed to take three days. ...

Excited about the Early and Epic Tours

As you may already know, Adventure Cycling announced their Early, Epic, and Educational tours for 2013 this past Wednesday. The response has been very overwhelming here in the tours department. The January Florida Keys and Florida LTC tours are already 50% full in just 3 days!

You might ask, what are the Adventure Cycling tours director's favorite trips from the Early, Epic, and Educational tours list? I have actually already ridden the Florida Keys, Outer Banks, Southern Tier and TransAm tours and thoroughly enjoyed the experiences. So if I could only choose 2 trips from the list, my top two choices would be Death Valley and the Underground Railroad: North to Niagara tours.

Just the name Death Valley evokes in my mind the challenges of riding tough dry terrain, extreme conditions, pioneering conditions, and a parched throat. However, our Death Valley experience features a van to carry your equipment and to carry the food and water needed for the journey; not to mention the adult beverages. A bucket list tour if I have ever saw one. It surely is on my bucket list and maybe you will see me leading on of our three Death Valley tours next year.

Among the requirements I have when consider and epic adventure are scenery, food, cultural diversity, pie, a few tough riding days, food, history, coffee, small groups, and food. Well the Underground Railroad: North to Niagara offers all that and so much more. One half of my family roots come from the deep south and they migrate north out of Mississippi into Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and Michigan. A route almost identical to our revised tour. Using the van to carry all our gear and supplies, I could immerse myself into some facinating US History, beautifully forested areas, lakes, rivers, valleys, and of course the culinary diversity of the small cafes and roadside stands along the way. The meandering riding through the Ohio farmland on the way to Niagara Falls is spectacular.

In the end, all the tours that Adventure Cycling is offering are outstanding and will offer a very enjoyable journey, with professional leaders. If you can't find something off the current list of tours, then just hang on until October 10 when we announce the remaining slate of 2013 tours. You are in for a special treat!

Nasty noises from a forgotten component

Roberta returned from her emergency visit to Roberts with gleaming silver cranks and running oh so sweetly. Unfortunately this happy state of affairs only lasted a few days. Her cranks still gleamed but suddenly, without warning, she started to sound like a sack of spanners! One minute I was riding happily along, the next she [...]
