The Mirror Man: Looking Forward

When I arrived at work Monday morning I learned that Chuck Harris, the Mirror Man, had passed away. Without thinking about it I immediately raised my hand to touch the glasses-mounted rearview mirror that I wore. Chuck made that mirror for me many years ago, one of more than 88,000 that he made by hand over five decades.

Since 1972 I?ve worn one of Chuck?s mirrors on my glasses almost every day whether topping a pass in Peru, riding a quiet backroad in England, or making the short commute to the office here in Missoula, Montana. I?ll continue to use my Chuck Harris mirror in the years ahead.

Chuck won?t be up there looking down on us. No, he will be gazing up into the firmament looking for ways to improve things with his quirky innovations. But he?ll be keeping an eye on us with his mirror.

A story about Chuck, called The Mirror Man of Gambier, appeared in the April 2011 issue of Adventure Cyclist.

Facebook Memorial page for Chuck Harris has been set up in his honor.

Tour De Wallonie ? Team Radioshack Bounces Back

After facing a great many challenges during the Tour de France earlier this month, Team Radioshack (RSH) needed to demonstrate they could still field a squad ready and able to compete at the front of the peloton. The team did just that in the five stage Tour De Wallonie, which concluded today in Thuin, Belgium. [...]

The Morning?s Half-Stage at De Panne

Team RadioShack?s Michal Kwiatkowski (POL) hung tough today in cold, wet conditions to take 7th place in a furious bunch sprint finish to the 111-kilometer half-stage of the 3 Days of De Panne. With the unusual two event closing day format, like the Criterium International, this first half-stage started early and was over by noon. [...]

When should you replace your bike chain?

Like it or not, bike chains ?stretch? over time. Only by a small amount, but multiply that by the number of times each link passes over your chainrings, cassette and jockey wheels and you?ll quickly wear them out, if you don?t regularly replace your chain. A worn chain ultimately leads to the most common mechanical [...]

Tribute to Wouter Weylandt (#108), 1984-2011

I’m sure many of you have heard the news regarding the tragic death of Wouter Weylandt of Leopard-Trek last week during the third stage of the Giro d?Italia, after he crashed during a mountain descent. The funeral was this week. This horribly sad event has really given me pause, but also a deeper understanding and [...]

The Tour de France Opens Dramatically

The Tour de France Opens Dramatically (But the Shack Make a Great Showing) For Team RadioShack supporters the expectation of our favourite team must be immense; the year to date has been a good one for the Team. Latterly Levi Leipheimer took the Tour de Suisse by riding an exceptional final stage time trial, Chris [...]

Ben Hermans, Top 12 at Brabant Arrow

Team RadioShack?s Ben Hermans (BEL) showed excellent form in Wednesday?s 51st edition of De Brabantse Pijl, one of the Flanders Classics, which kicked off in Leuven, Belgium and finished in Overijse some 201 kilometers (124 miles) away. He missed a move by the eventual winner Philippe Gilbert?s Omega-Lotto team when they pulled hard to get [...]

TdF Stage 11 ? Wet, Cold, Dry, Downpour

In the last flat 167.5-km sprinter?s stage before the Tour de France climbs into the Pyrénées tomorrow, the cyclists raced mostly southwest from Blaye-les-Mines to Lavaur, France on a chilly wet day that saw some welcomed caution on slick roads. No serious crashes, no one hurt, just good racing. After only a few minutes on [...]
