Altura Night Vision Flite Jacket Review

The Altura Night vision Flite is quite an expensive lightweight waterproof jacket. The main question is whether it is worth the £70 – when there are quite a few alternative jackets at a lower price? Firstly, it is very light (medium size is only 140grams) and very compact. It comes in a small grey bag, [...]

Livin' Well in Tennessee

I love it when we bag a new state with a Bike Overnight, and this is the third week in a row our roving reporters have ridden in and written about virgin territory. Last week it was Rhode Island; the week before that, Alaska. This week: Tennessee!

"Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the obvious place to get a wilderness fix for residents of Knoxville," writes Jon Livengood. "Just a short trip down the road and you have big wilderness, wild animals, and great views -- but these great features also bring great numbers of tourists.

"That's why, when we had a free weekend, we decided to go and explore Big Ridge State Park. Big Ridge is an awesome short tour because of its close proximity to Knoxville (about 35 miles from downtown), the excellent roads available to ride en route, and the facilities, scenery, and attraction of the park itself.

"About 20 miles into our ride, we noticed the terrain starting to change. The climbs started getting a little longer, with more elevation gain. There were some tricky/rough, steep descents (e.g., Old Tazewell Pike), along with some really nice longer hills that wound up and over the ridges ... maybe two miles long at the most. We were then treated to a fast, flowing downhill on U.S. 61, with a couple of sweeping switchbacks right before we got to the park. I couldn't think of a better way to end the day's ride.

"Riding into the park, we instantly noticed the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps. There are some beautiful stonework structures located throughout the park that are really cool to see. The workmanship that went into them is incredible. The fact that they are close to 80 years old, and are still solid as can be, is amazing."

Our current Photo of the Week comes from the popular story To the Sugar Shack and Back: An Alberta Overnight, by Dave Buchanan. That's where ten-year-old Max, shown below, comes up with one of our all-time favorite quotes: ?Boy, Dad, those gel packs sure make me talk a lot.?

1984 Bike Tour: Day 54 ? We learn about Navajo code talkers

WINDOW ROCK, ARIZ. - Travelling cross-country by bicycle has put us in contact with many interesting folks we wouldn't have met ordinarily. Tonight we staying at the home of a World War II veteran; a member of a group of unsung heroes whose stories couldn't be told until recently.

Roy Hawthorne was a member of the cadre of Navajos who joined the Marines and became "codetalkers."

They fashioned a code based on Navajo words that represented military information. The Japanese never broke the code, and the codetalkers couldn't talk about their exploits until the government declassified the code in the late 1960s. ....
