Wheelsucking and Road Racing

I was cycling into town this morning with tired legs after a hilly ride in the Chilterns the previous day. I was recovering nicely on the smooth newly tarmaced Iffley Road. A commuter in lycra shorts came storming past me on a hybrid bike. I couldn’t resist jumping on his back wheel and following him [...]

Countdown to June 1st

April showers bring May flowers, and May brought the Build It. Bike It. Be a Part of It. campaign. Now with June on the horizon, we officially have 43 hours left to hit our $50,000 fundraising goal for the U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS). At our current total of $40,845, we are so close to where we would like to be. Help us raise that last $9,155 in the next two days: Donate today!

Why should you give to build the U.S. Bicycle Route System? Here's a recap of some of the many reasons that we have mentioned over the last month (with a few new ones thrown in):

  • Bicycle routes bring people together.
  • Numerous other countries have built cycling networks and have seen a spike in cycle usage as a result.
  • Adventure Cycling staffer Amanda would like to take her dog across the country on a U.S. Bicycle Route. I sure would too!
  • The U.S. Bicycle Route System will mean more infrastructure for the traveling cyclist.
  • Signed routes would make wayfinding super easy.
  • The average American spends more than 100 hours a year commuting to and from work in their cars (that doesn't count the time spent going other places; total driving around time of 434 hours per year in your car). This 5% of your life could be much better spent biking around on official bicycle routes.
  • The Federal Highway Administration calculated that the average annual miles driven per person (of legal driving age) in the U.S. is 13,476. Imagine how fit you would be if you biked those instead!
  • Biking makes you happy.
Do you need another reason to help build the U.S. Bicycle Route System?

If you donate today, not only will you be helping us beat our $50,000 goal, but you will help us meet a $1,000 fundraising challenge offered by Primal Wear, and be entered to win one of these Osprey hydration packs (they're gender specific)! If you missed this offer in week one of the Build It. Bike It. Be a Part of It. campaign, don't make the same mistake twice. Judith Knoll is currently enjoying the Osprey pack that she won from donating on the first day of the campaign. Donate by May 31 and you will be put in a drawing to win!

1984 Bike Tour: Day 23 ? Rest and repair

CARBONDALE, ILL. -- We had plans to take off this morning for the Missouri border. I jumped out of bed early, did some laundry and putzed around. When it was 10 a.m. and we were just getting to breakfast, we came to the brilliant conclusion that we were still half hungover, we hadn't stopped since Charlottesville, Va., and we could ...
