TdF Stage 10 ? Klöden Well Positioned

A very hilly 158-kilometers (about 100 miles) of warm, humid conditions over 4 categorized climbs saw the peloton working hard today after Monday?s rest day, with the sprinters teams looking to neutralize any breaks to choreograph a bunch sprint finish. And that?s just what happened. It looked like HTC-Highroad?s well-honed sprint train would [...]

The London Cyclist guide to cleaning your bike even when you?ve not got the room to do it

Keeping your bike clean when you?ve not really got the room to do it is a pain. However, it is something that should be in your calendar at least once a month. It should be one of those things, you shouldn?t even think about having to do. ?Oh, it?s the first of the month ? [...]

My Top Ten Reasons the Help Build the U.S. Bicycle Route System Today

The other day while sitting at my desk I read an (admittedly outdated) article from NPR about lists and why people love them. And of course NPR got all 'meta' and wrote it in list format. This knowledge spurred me to think about my own personal lists. Now as I write to you we are in the second week of our Build It. Bike It. Be a Part of It. fundraiser to build the U.S. Bicycle Route System. Though the campaign has only been officially running for eight days, in the office we have been working on it for months. That has provided me a lot of time to think about my personal reasons for wanting to build a national network of officially recognized, mapped, and signed bicycle routes. For your reading pleasure I have provided you with my list today. I hope you enjoy it. If you feel so motivated, please consider writing your own list. Share it with your family and friends. I bet they would be interested in helping to build the U.S. Bicycle Route System too.

My Top Ten Reasons to Help Build the U.S. Bicycle Route System Today

10. I like to bike. Don't you like to bike? My bike even has a name. She has been with me across the country and through thousands of miles.
9. If I give now I will be helping to meet the $2,500 challenge offered by Team Estrogen, and my dollars go twice as far.
8. How cool would an official bike route atlas look on my bookshelf?
7. All of the other countries are doing it. Spain, France, the UK, Norway, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands, and Ireland, just to name a few.
6. The first three people to give $25 or more today (May 8th) will win Planet Bike bike-safe gift packages. (See picture below.)
5. Signs on routes make navigating super easy.
4. Most of my friends and family don't live in my town. With a U.S. Bicycle Route System I can ride my bike to go visit them. Its a workout and a vacation all in one!
3. Rural America is chock full of corn. It is unfortunately not chock full of places that cyclists can use the bathroom and pick up supplies. Officially recognized bicycle routes encourage the development of cyclist specific infrastructure and facilities.
2. I know a lot of people who are afraid to travel by bike because of poor road conditions and a lack of knowledge. Give them an official bicycle route and they will be good to go!
1. The U.S. Bicycle Route System will bring better biking to more people by making it safe, accessible, and easy to travel by bike!

Why do you want to help build the U.S. Bicycle Route System? Go to our campaign page to make a donation and share your reason today. You can also tweet it to us using the #2012USBRS hashtag. Check out @USBicycleRoutes on Twitter to see what others had to say.

Don't forget to donate early to win the Planet Bike bike-safe gift pack.

Thanks to Team Estrogen and Planet Bike for sponsoring our fundraising challenge and gift offer this week!

Bagworks Builds the USBRS

Hello to all you dedicated adventure cyclists and bicycle advocates!

We are in the fourth week of our Build It. Bike It. Be a Part of It. fundraiser for the U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS). We have had a lot of support thus far and are currently looking at a grand total of $23,450. We still need your help to reach our $50,000 goal by May 31st.

Help us today by making a donation to meet a $2,500 fundraising challenge posed by one of our business supporters, Stan's NoTubes. Also, everyone who donates today is entered to win a handcrafted handlebar bag and recycled TransAm map wallet, created by our very own Paul Hansbarger. This is an exclusive offer, so donate today by 11:59pm EST to win!

Would you like to know more about Paul and his company Hans Bagworks?

Hans Bagworks is a "part-time labor of love" started by Missoula resident and Adventure Cycling staff member Paul Hansbarger, who was inspired by his own touring experience and love of hand-crafted goods to start sewing bicycle bags for himself and friends. Hans Bagworks makes a variety of handmade messenger bags, handlebar bags, frame bags, and other accessories for bicycle touring, bikepacking, and everyday use. In addition to bicycle bags, Hans Bagworks designs a line of simple, yet functional wallets and smart phone cases re-purposed from out-of-date Adventure Cycling Bicycle Route maps. Every Hans Bagworks creation is made one at a time by Paul and his fiance Jessica in their home in Missoula, Montana.

Paul's motivation for building the U.S. Bicycle Route System?

"I first discovered Adventure Cycling Association while planning a tour of my own on the Southern Tier a few years ago, and have been a dedicated fan of the magazine, maps, and resources ever since. The USBRS is an exciting project and I'm excited to donate one of my handmade bags in hopes that it will help raise some needed funds and attention for a network of bicycle routes in the U.S."

My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies

I went for a ride today and, once more, forgot to take my camera with me.  To be fair I only did a seaside loop, so I’d probably have been hard pushed to show you something new.  Having said that, the fact the sun was shining and the skies were blue might have added novelty [...]
