Bicycle advocacy groups are beating the drums for us to contact our U.S. senators and congressmen this week.Lackluster transportation bills in the House and Senate that all but ignore bicycle and pedestrian funding are the issue again.Groups such as League of American Bicyclists, Rails to Trails Conservancy, Adventure Cycling Association, and Bicycle Alliance of Washington, among others, are putting out the call for help ...
Recently we've had some great media coverage of Adventure Cycling Association. Here are some highlights. As you may have heard, the bike-travel mecca (our world headquarters here in Missoula) is expanding! Big thanks to the Missoulian, our local daily paper, for their recent report on our building efforts. For a fun glimpse at this historic transformation, check out our Flickr slideshow of the building remodel! The Missoulian also recently ran a wonderful profile of our new tours director, Arlen Hall. The story begins: Arlen Hall was pedaling alone in the Deep South when the driver of a big green pickup truck came up honking behind him.Hall, who is black, had tried to get some friends to join him on the Mississippi bicycle tour to be safe. Instead, he turned alone to face the driver blaring the horn of the truck, maybe an old Ford. That encounter in Canton, Miss., would turn the solo bicycle ride into the most important trips, he has ever taken. Keep reading, it's a riveting and moving story about how bicycle touring connects the past and present for Hall, another inspiring take on bike travel.Bicycle Retailer and Industry News recently published an annual review of cycling nonprofits by Doug McClellan, "Industry nonprofits roll through tough times." Given the tough climate we're doing pretty well and we're very grateful for the generous support of our members and donors. To learn more about our recent record-breaking year, check out the news release roundup of this last fiscal year, "2011 Caps Decade of Growth for Adventure Cycling Association." Again, thanks for your support!
I got a chance to contribute to the "Overcoming Commuting Obstacles" (PDF) feature in Bicycle Times' February issue. My contribution, which hopes to help cyclists overcome "There's no good way to get there by bike" obstacle, is on page 37. As an experienced commuting cyclist who has ridden in all types of urban environments, it turns out that I search for commuting route based on some of the same criteria I would use to plan a route for a bike tour.Speaking of touring! "The Mystique of Route 66," David Lamb's piece on the revival of this iconic route from Chicago to LA, appeared in the February issue of Smithsonian magazine, giving special mention to our next long-distance cycling route: Bicycle Route 66 (due out in late 2014).--NEWS, NETWORKING, AND NEW MEDIA is posted by Winona Bateman, Adventure Cycling's media director, and highlights cool media (articles, videos, photos, etc.) and meet-ups related to Adventure Cycling and bicycle travel. Today marked the 10th stage of this year?s 3,525 kilometer (2190+ mile), 21-stage Giro d?Italia. Some of the great racing so far will not soon be forgotten, but unfortunately this year?s 94th edition of the race may be most remembered for the horrible tragedy that befell one of its up-and-coming stars on Monday?s stage [...]
Today?s 4th stage of the Vuelta Ciclista al País Vasco, Tour of the Basque Country in Spain, was predicted by many to be the decisive battle in the mountains that would reveal the one or two riders that could stomp down on the field and make this race their own. And while it was [...]
Team RadioShack?s Chris Horner schooled the peloton at the Tour of California on how to power up the summit on Sierra Road at the end of the 82-mile (132-kilometer) stage from Livermore to San Jose, with a burst of power that must have left heads shaking in disbelief. While everyone was convinced that Levi [...]
FORT WORTH — It could be expected that a City Council decision to spend about $50,000 on showers for City Hall employees who ride their bicycles to work or jog at lunchtime might raise a few hackles in this very … Continue reading →
I was contacted recently about the ThermaCare Heat Wraps which are part of the Pfizer portfolio. They offered me 100 free Heat Wraps to test and I thought it would be a good idea to do a group test on these and see what everyone thinks. If it helps then great, come back and report [...]
Albert, views it all in disgust. Its happened twice now. Twice I have entered a 200km GPS Audax, and on both occasions I have had to cancel when I got up in the morning. For a 200km on a Sunday, I have to set off at 4am, otherwise Im not back in time to make [...]
No matter how many times I write it this spring, I’ll never tire of typing the name Klöden and the word ?WIN? in the same sentence! Team RadioShack’s 35-year old German wonder bested another field of quality contenders in the opening 13.4-kilometer Time Trial of the Giro del Trentino today, clocking 15:24 on the [...]
Another day, same old dilemma. To ride or not ride? Are those roads as dry and ice-free as they look? Is it really -4C?! While up above the skies are blue and the sun is shining. I consulted weather websites, Facebook friends, Mim (who I was due to ride with), the Oracle at Delphi…well, ok, [...]
