Two choices for citizen cyclists at 2012 l'Etape du Tour

Although the 2012 Tour de France includes a prologue and two individual time trials, the 10,000 cycling enthusiasts who take to the l'Etape du Tour will be challenged by two standard road routes.

The two bicycle rides will let citizen cyclists test themselves against the pros on actual routes from that year's Tour de France, albeit on different days.

Tour de France organizers historically chose the mountainous "queen stage" for each year's l'Etape. Last year, they broadened the participation base by announcing a second, less debilitating route.

Unfortunately, the Tour didn't produce route profiles ....

Sebastien Rosseler Wins Overall In De Panne

After riding pretty quietly for the first 3 stages, Team RadioShack?s Sebastien Rosseler (BEL) decided to put the hammer down and ate up the pavement in the afternoon?s individual time trail at the 3 Days of De Panne, beating the field by nearly 14 seconds on the 14.7-kilometer course with a time of 18:31.83. Why should I buy a folding bike!

For your typical city occupant folding bikes usually are the most appropriate way to get around. With a lot of Londoners living in flats and apartments with little if any storage space a foldable bicycle is going to be much more convenient when compared to a standard sized cycle. The bikes fold up rapidly and are generally small enough to be tucked away in the home or taken on trains and buses during the particular times that ordinary cycles are restricted on account of passenger over crowding. Folding bikes can in fact be taken on the tube system, taken on buses and even taken on Croydon's Tram link system. Officially the bikes may need to be in a small bag but in practice Transport for London rarely enforce this and if they do then a pair of black bin liners will suffice. A folder will permit a person to circumvent the train companies' cycle restrictions and you could actually take your folding bike home in a minicab on a Friday night following a few bevies at the pub! There are plenty of different kinds of folding bicycles available, from leading manufacturers including Dahon, Brompton and Pashley.

Adventure Cycling Overnight ? A Tour of Epic Proportions

Okay, maybe I can't really call our staff overnight epic (it was only 30 miles each way), but it was epic-ly fun! It was a great chance for everyone to get to ride together, have a look at Paul's hand-made bikepacking setup, and enjoy a lazy afternoon at a time of year when the evenings are still fairly long. Our pace was approximately 6 miles an hour. More than anything, it reminded me that touring bikes don't have to be expensive jobs that come with rack mounts! I saw people touring on mountain bikes, old road bikes, and everything in between. And whatever they were aboard, everyone was having a fabulous time.

I always find that touring is a lot about stopping and enjoying what's along the way. Note the puffy blouses that Rachel and I found at a thrift store (top photo). So breezy and cool. We also stopped for juice and fruit at an "aid station" (we were just working so hard!) set up by our kind co-worker, Ted. On the way home, Alison and I stopped for pastries at a small farmers' market, and I found some deer antlers that could be perfect to use as a rack for hanging my cycling hat collection. The vendor seemed a little worried that I was on a bike, but I explained that this kind of riding was made for collecting oddities. Alison helped me strap the antlers on over my Therma-A-Rest, and off we pedaled back to Missoula ... but not before riding our two-wheeled steeds through a drive-through coffee stand for our lattes.

Good day to be a bicyclist in Pacific Northwest

Although I'm often the first to complain about the weather, I'll have to admit this was a good day to be a bicycle rider in the Pacific Northwest.

I came upon more than the usual number of cyclists enjoying the sunny skies and temperatures in the mid to upper 60s.

The main conversation was the "great weather" and how we ...

Levi Leipheimer Maintains 2nd in Catalunya 2011

Today?s 5th stage of Spain?s venerated Volta a Catalunya was about as mountainous as a route can be and still not be officially classified a full on ?mountain stage.? Starting in El Vendrell and finishing some 206 kilometers (128 miles) later in Tarragona, the route profile of this year?s longest stage had the [...]
