Friends from the Road

I've been thinking recently about all the friends I make on the road. Not friends I make while touring, although those are certainly special friends indeed, but the friends I make during my daily commute to and from work each day. The lady who somehow always ends up stopped at the same stoplight as me and says, "Do you really ride in ALL KINDS OF WEATHER?!" The little old man who gives me the thumbs up whenever I pass him walking on California Street. These people have become as important to my morning as my ritual cup of coffee, and I like to think that they look for me every morning, too.

I wanted to give a little shout out to Osprey Packs in this post because I have a bag (the Momentum 34) that I use for commuting all the time and it's totally awesome! I'm actually pretty sure that's how most of my road friends recognize me: the bright yellow bag cannot be missed. How do you carry your stuff to work? In a pannier? Backpack? Bucket?

The 9-day long, 75th edition of the Tour de Suisse starts on Saturday, June 11th, and as usual, it promises to be a real shoot out, with many of the sports elite stars making their annual pilgrimage to the land of private banking, precise time pieces and great chocolate as the traditional tune up for [...]

Best Eateries on the TransAm

I put out a call a few weeks back for your input on the best eateries on the TransAmerica Trail and here are the results!

Jim Hammond sent me an email almost immediately voting for the Cassoday Cafe in Cassoday, Kansas (pictured above). "Great buffet! But you need to get there
by about 3:00. All the lemonade you can drink and great pies and cakes. Friendly folks!"

Susan Renee Smith recommends the Manatee Cafe near St. Augustine, (on Highway 16, east of I-95, about 3 miles from the Atlantic Ocean). Why? "Excellent, fresh-made organic food meals, veggie omelettes, breakfast burritos, chicken burritos, salads, fruit bowl, yummy coffee, fresh orange or veggie juices. Open 'til 4pm -- same menu all day. "

Neil Smith offered, "The steak house, Lolo springs, ate there on 2008 cross America ride. Wow...the best steak house in the world..." Mmmmm ... steak...

Three great suggestions sounds like ... but there's gotta be more ... the TransAm spans more than 4,000 miles coast to coast. So, show your favorite eatery some love by sharing its name, website, and why it was so amazing, in the comments below.

Adventure Cycling's Awesome Library

Pretty much every time I head toward the kitchen here at Adventure Cycling's world headquarters, I find myself perusing a set of bookshelves that hold most of the contents of our library. Easily distracted by both books and historical artifacts, one title or another catches my eye every time I walk past.

A few treasures from the collection:

"The leader of a cycling party of boys (or girls for that matter) must have an abundance of enthusiasm. Boys are adventuresome by nature, and the leader should match, if not excel them in that spirit."

Sadly, this British book from 1959 is not about us. Adventure Cycling is just one of many antique bicycling books donated by local resident Dick Taylor, which we keep in a special place away from the main stacks.

"Now you have the green light...the rest is up to you!"

This 1975 booklet, produced in Maryland, features the most entertaining pants ever on the cover. Do you think those fancy bell-bottoms get caught in the chain of his bike?

"Over the years I've thought about what is so different and unique about riding a bicycle. It's not easy to define; I have to compare it to other things I really like, such as rock music and basketball. A bicycle gives me a special combination of rhythm and speed that is continuously exciting, and it's different all the time. There's a freshness to it."

As a native of Portland, Oregon, I couldn't help but get really excited about this connection with our beloved Portland Trailblazers. Bill Walton was playing center for the Blazers in 1977, when Portland won the NBA finals, a feat the franchise hasn't repeated...yet. And Bill likes Bikecentennial: our maps are featured in the touring chapter!

"In my survey of women cyclists, out of a dozen things that might create problems, 'the inconsiderate motorist' was ranked most troublesome by more respondents than any other item. This is the driver who unnerves you by passing too close or by making a turn right in front of you so  you have to brake to a halt or turn quickly even though you hadn't intended to. Sooner or later we all meet this driver, and we are wary."

Adventure Cycling's own membership director, Julie Huck, graces the cover of this title! It's a great book, too ? it inspired me in my early days as an adult cyclist when I read it cover-to-cover about ten years ago.

Our most valuable treasure in the stacks is Chuck, the tenacious volunteer who has been working on cataloging the collection for almost three years! The library is still in development which means we can't open it to interested researchers, but Adventure Cycling co-founder, Greg Siple, is hoping to one day offer library access as a member benefit. In the meantime, you can check out the Adventure Cycling Library on LibraryThing.

Itching for more? There are a couple of other pretty special books I've unearthed from the early days of the organization ? I'll be blogging about those finds in just a few weeks. Stay tuned!

Levi Leipheimer Maintains 2nd in Catalunya 2011

Today?s 5th stage of Spain?s venerated Volta a Catalunya was about as mountainous as a route can be and still not be officially classified a full on ?mountain stage.? Starting in El Vendrell and finishing some 206 kilometers (128 miles) later in Tarragona, the route profile of this year?s longest stage had the [...]

TdF Stage 12 ? Klöden ? Pain and Suffering

To the uninitiated, when enthusiasts talk about how elite cyclists can suffer and push themselves through pain, it?s usually a good thing, a compliment. It often refers to a rider pedaling up a high mountain or a long time trial where the toughest mental competitors drive themselves beyond their physical red zone and can [...]
