What Road Bike tyre Clincher, Tubular or Tubeless?

The tire that most people are familiar with is the clincher tire. The clincher tire consists of an inner tube and a tire. The tire has a bead on each outer edge of the tire. But there are some other chooses you should consider before choosing the common clincher tyre. Namely Tubular and Tubeless This post explains the advantages and disadvantage of the 3 different tries you can use on your road bike. There has been a big debate at my club as to which tries are the best, at the moment the juror is still out and may well be out for some time as many road cyclist are not decided as which tries are best. Question: what tyre do you use and why?

Adventure Cycling's Awesome Library

Pretty much every time I head toward the kitchen here at Adventure Cycling's world headquarters, I find myself perusing a set of bookshelves that hold most of the contents of our library. Easily distracted by both books and historical artifacts, one title or another catches my eye every time I walk past.

A few treasures from the collection:

"The leader of a cycling party of boys (or girls for that matter) must have an abundance of enthusiasm. Boys are adventuresome by nature, and the leader should match, if not excel them in that spirit."

Sadly, this British book from 1959 is not about us. Adventure Cycling is just one of many antique bicycling books donated by local resident Dick Taylor, which we keep in a special place away from the main stacks.

"Now you have the green light...the rest is up to you!"

This 1975 booklet, produced in Maryland, features the most entertaining pants ever on the cover. Do you think those fancy bell-bottoms get caught in the chain of his bike?

"Over the years I've thought about what is so different and unique about riding a bicycle. It's not easy to define; I have to compare it to other things I really like, such as rock music and basketball. A bicycle gives me a special combination of rhythm and speed that is continuously exciting, and it's different all the time. There's a freshness to it."

As a native of Portland, Oregon, I couldn't help but get really excited about this connection with our beloved Portland Trailblazers. Bill Walton was playing center for the Blazers in 1977, when Portland won the NBA finals, a feat the franchise hasn't repeated...yet. And Bill likes Bikecentennial: our maps are featured in the touring chapter!

"In my survey of women cyclists, out of a dozen things that might create problems, 'the inconsiderate motorist' was ranked most troublesome by more respondents than any other item. This is the driver who unnerves you by passing too close or by making a turn right in front of you so  you have to brake to a halt or turn quickly even though you hadn't intended to. Sooner or later we all meet this driver, and we are wary."

Adventure Cycling's own membership director, Julie Huck, graces the cover of this title! It's a great book, too ? it inspired me in my early days as an adult cyclist when I read it cover-to-cover about ten years ago.

Our most valuable treasure in the stacks is Chuck, the tenacious volunteer who has been working on cataloging the collection for almost three years! The library is still in development which means we can't open it to interested researchers, but Adventure Cycling co-founder, Greg Siple, is hoping to one day offer library access as a member benefit. In the meantime, you can check out the Adventure Cycling Library on LibraryThing.

Itching for more? There are a couple of other pretty special books I've unearthed from the early days of the organization ? I'll be blogging about those finds in just a few weeks. Stay tuned!
