Battle of the Bags

Pretty much once a week someone calls and says, "So, just lay it out for me. Which are better? Ortlieb or Arkel panniers?"

If only it were that easy! First off, I'll start out by saying that Arkel (Canada) and Ortlieb (Germany) are both fantastic companies that stand behind their products. If you ever have any problems with them, you'll have no problem getting them warrantied or replaced.

So, let's talk water proofiness. Orlieb panniers are without a doubt the most waterproof; they're made from an extremely waterproof polyester fabric with a tight fitting lid closure (just don't let water get in!). Arkel panniers are made out of a super tough, water-resistant Cordura; but, in an actual downpour, you'll need a Raincover. Arkel makes ones that fit each bag and can be purchased separately (more economically minded tourists just use a trash bag).

Are you the kind of person who likes to throw everything into your suitcase and head out for the weekend? Or do you like to have separate sections for your socks and shirts? This may ultimately decide whether you choose Arkel or Ortlieb panniers. Arkel panniers feature lots of different inside and outside pockets, so you can put your toothpaste and hairbrush in one place, and your stock of apples in another. Orlieb panniers are basically one big compartment, so you can either divide things into separate stuff sacks, or let chaos reign.

This is a case where personal preference really rules. And either way you go, you won't be disappointed.

Thinking of bike touring? Start here

I?m losing count of the number of times I?ve entertained the thought of doing a bike tour. London to Amsterdam would be fascinating. Not only would I enjoy the long ride but then on the other end I could be discovering Amsterdam?s cycling culture (amongst other cultures). Or how about from London to the South [...]

Bicycling the Borders of Afghanistan ? in America

T.B.F.D. is short for ?Traversing a Foreign Border Domestically,? and that?s exactly what Joseph Bigley is doing right now.

Bigley, a visual artist and art instructor at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, is tracing a route of roughly 3,500 miles that approximates the size and shape of Afghanistan. His ride began at ground zero in New York City on May 12 and will end there around July 20. He?s pedaling approximately 75 miles per day, sometimes on pavement and at other times on gravel, riding solo and unsupported. Because the borders of Afghanistan are irregular and jagged, so is his route ? he sometimes makes as many as 120 turns in a day. Aboard a Trek bicycle, Bigley is pulling a hand-built trailer that he says serves as a "symbol of sovereignty.? He?s also giving presentations along the way at contemporary art and social science venues.

Bigley's performance-art project, as outlined at his website, is a symbolic act designed to "gauge public opinion of the conflict in Afghanistan as well as to point at the curious nature of the idea of national political boundaries.?

At this page you can see Bigley?s approximate route ? and the outline of Afghanistan ? superimposed on a map of the eastern United States.

Hiplok review

Bicycle chains are heavy necessities for cyclists. Over time I?ve tested a number of inventive methods for carrying them. On the handlebars was a huge failure as they make the important act of steering a difficulty. Attached to my belt using a device such a lock holster worked okay. Of course, in the bag is [...]

A leisurely cycle round the Loire

We've had several enjoyable short trips to France in the last few years with me cycling and Dennis accompanying me on a 49cc scooter. However whenever we've tried to go for a fortnight or more something has gone badly wrong. The year before last Dennis' ancient Honda 90 gave up the ghost and had to [...]

Vuelta al Pais Vasco, Stage 1, Zumarraga to Zumarraga

The last few kilometres were all that I managed to see of today?s stage 1 of the Pais Vasco and coverage was intermittent even then as the cameras cut back to the finish line rather than following all the action. But when the focus was on the riders what a stage this was. Let?s be clear. Chris [...]

Meet the Cycle Pub of Bend, Oregon

It appears that, in some places anyway, you can drink all the beer you want and still pedal your way around ? as long as you?re not also doing the steering. The Cycle Pub, in the central Oregon outdoors mecca of Bend, gives you the opportunity to pair the passions of cycling and world-class microbreweries, and "create an experience you and your fellow riders will never forget. It's a non-traditional bike, where you sit and pedal in a non-traditional way, and enjoy non-traditional features and beverages. For lack of a better description, it's a rolling pub on wheels, that you pedal."

Now, Bend is not the first community to host such a pedal-powered party wagon. I've read about similar sudsmobiles prowling the streets of places like Minneapolis and Amsterdam. But is there any other town where you can tour so many microbreweries in such a small area?

All Abeerd! Sounds like a real Bender to me. Just be sure to walk or take a taxi back to your hotel room. Or, opt instead to visit Bend's craft breweries aboard the Bend Brew Bus, which provides hotel pickup and drop-off. (The Cycle Pub is rather unwieldly and has no reverse, so it must choose its routes carefully.)
