US cyclists line up for 2011 Tour de France

With the Tour de France less than two weeks away, several US cyclists are showing up on the teams' nine-man rosters.

Surprising no one, Lance Armstrong will not be riding for Team RadioShack. But several other "old-timers" from the US are returning to the Tour, as well as at least one newcomer.

Leading that group of veterans is George Hincapie, 37, left, of Greenville, SC. Now cycling for BMC, this will be Hincapie's 16th Tour de France. That ties retired Dutch cyclist Joop Zoetemelk's record.

In eight of those Tours, he competed on the Tour-winning team -- seven for Armstrong and once for Alberto Contador. This year, the super domestique will be looking to put teammate Cadel Evans into the yellow jersey ....

Diabetes on the Divide

Tony Cervanti, 42 years old, has been living with Type 1 diabetes for most of his life. Over the past three years, he's been training to race the Tour Divide ? on which he'll ride more than 2,700 miles from Banff to Antelope Wells ? despite serious concerns expressed by his nutritionist and others. Racing the Tour Divide is a monumental undertaking for any cyclist, and a particularly dangerous one for an individual with his insulin-dependent condition.

According to this Kickstarter page, Taproot Films will be making a feature-length documentary about Tony's ride, but only if they raise $50,000 by June 18th. (They've got a long row to hoe, having brought in less than $4,000 as of June 2nd.)

Tony, who hails from Durham, North Carolina, is signed up for the Individual Time Trial category of the Tour Divide. He intends to set out from Banff on June 24th, a full two weeks later than those in the "Grand Depart" category, who will leave Banff on June 10th. And Tony's is looking like an excellent choice for 2011, because Grand Depart riders are going to be forced to take several detours and miss some terrific sections of the Great Divide, due to late-season snowpacks in the northern and central Rockies.

In his video, Tony admits to feeling tremendous pressure; almost as though he is carrying the flag for Type 1 diabetics everywhere. If he's successful in his endeavor, he will make history.

Best of luck to you Tony. We'll see you on the trail.
