Freire Has Stage Victory Invalidated at Basque Tour

Just when you think you?re witnessing one of the least interesting stages of the summer, a 179-kilometer (111-mile) up and down grinder in the Vuelta Ciclista al País Vasco, with the predictable break away being dangled on a 2-minute string by the big named teams who will inevitably bunch it over the last climb to [...]

And about that December Letter from the Editor ?

I sincerely apologize for the foolishly stated words in my column from the December/January issue of Adventure Cyclist magazine. These were my own words entirely and do no reflect the views of Adventure Cycling Association.

I did not mean to insinuate that people who work in the financial industry should be considered crooks. In fact, my mother worked in for Merrill Lynch and Legg Mason for about 20 years, and I appreciated all her good work. When I wrote my column, I was thinking of some of the financial sector leaders who testified before Congress and seemed to show little remorse for activities that occurred under their watch -- but that was no excuse for what I wrote. As more than a few readers have pointed out to me since my column appeared, people don't read Adventure Cyclist for social commentary.

It was my intention to put a little perspective on the situation surrounding Lance Armstrong, who, although not in the bike-travel realm, looms over American cycling as surely as the moon orbits the earth -- but in the future, I'll figure out a better way to offer perspective.

Again, my apologies to anyone I may have offended.

A New Year in Tours

As another year comes to a close,  it is the perfect time to reflect on, and relive, all of the awesome cycling experiences, new cycling friendships, and beautiful stories from 2012. For me personally, I had some great opportunities this year: I rode on Adventure Cycling's Denali Adventure with my 22-year-old son Brandon. I led our revamped Wine & Harvest tour and met many new friends. I reconnected to Madge Noble, a trail angel that I met on my 2009 Natchez Trace tour in Canton, MS, and, I became the proud owner of Freddy, my new Bike Friday!

Working in the Tours Department of Adventure Cycling, I have been blessed with the opportunity to listen to the cycling dreams and aspirations of dozens of new and experience cyclists. Just the other day, a member share with me that he wanted to take our Tetons-Yellowstone tour because it would help him reach his goal of cycling in every state in the Lower 48. When I mentioned that all 50 states was one of my goals (only HI, OK, IA, AK, ND remain), we bonded instantly. Then I began to convince him that he might consider our Denali Adventure tour as a chance to bag his 49th state! In our department, a week doesn't go by without a great story about someone's cycling dream.

Thanks to the many cyclists that have already decided on their 2013 Adventure Cycling tour, we have sold out 18 of our 73 tour offerings, and another 23 trips are nearly full! But, it is not too late to fulfill your cycling dreams! Among our remaining offerings are:

Self-contained tours:

Inn-to-Inn tours:
Van-Supported trips:
Fully-supported events:
How can the dream weavers in the Adventure Cycling Tours Department help you in 2013?

Happy trails, happy dreams,, and Happy New Year!
